Orange operates on a CDMA network which is common the US, but not Europe or other continents where GSM is the standard. Other Australian networks such as Optus and Vodafone are also GSM. This means that your phone will not work on most other networks. You can't take your phone abroad and you can't roam on other Australian networks (except Telstra which is also CDMA). Therefore coverage can be affected because there is less network infrastructure to rely on.

Orange has built as strong and reliable CDMA network in Australia, especially in the major cities. If the coverage meets your needs, the rates are very good... 9c per 30 seconds to any Australian mobile network or landline. You also get a generous amount of free texts and calls to other Orange customers. But if you are outside your network area (which means roaming on Telstra's network), these calls will be more expensive.
